CHAI!! PATIENCE JONATHAN CALLS ON NIGERIAN WOMEN TO LEAVE KITCHEN.

Patience Jonathan, a former First Lady of Nigeria and the wife of former president Goodluck Jonathan, is one of those who can strongly disagree with President Muhammadu Buhari on his views about women’s place in the society. Recall that earlier today the president has laughed off his wife’s statement about his plans of re-election in 2019. During a joint press briefing with German Chancellor Angela Merkel he said: “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.” However, Dame Jonathan, who is known for her work towards advancing the rights of women and children, called on Nigerian women and girls to stop limiting themselves, go out of the shadow and expand horizons. Buhari needs prayers’ Fani-Kayode, Omokri hit out over ‘insults’ to first lady, Aisha In December 2014 during the presidential campaign Mrs Jonathan stated: “Nigerian women should no longer go back to the kitchen. It is not our portion to go back to the kitchen. We have women that are capable. We can contribute our quota to the development of Nigeria.” Garba Shehu, the official spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari, has hastened to explain the controversial statement of the president. Reacting to the development Garba Shehu: “My friends, can’t a leader get a sense humour anymore? Mr. President laughed before that statement was made.” He also stressed that President Buhari respects the place of women in our society and believes in their abilities. Mr Shehu mentioned that one of Nigeria’s most sensitive office today is headed by a woman, Mrs Adeosun. ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open: Nigerians can break the jinx – Toriola

THE jinx of not winning the title since its inception may be broken by Nigerian players at the 2016 ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open.
According to the most decorated table tennis player in Africa, Segun Toriola, there are possibility of Nigerian players dominating the tournament this year.

Twice Nigerian players have made it to the final of the ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open but they have not been able to clinch the title, and with just few days to the kick off, former African champion, Segun Toriola believes the title will not be beyond the reach of Nigerian players.
Toriola, a finalist at the 2013 edition of the competition said he is optimistic that Nigerian players have the wherewithal to claim the laurel but three-time winner, Egypt’s Omar Assar has been ‘extra-ordinary lucky’ to have claimed the titles ahead of the local players.
“I think Nigerian players have always been capable of winning the title in all the three editions of the competition. It was just that we were unlucky not to have won the title having made it to the final twice.
I played the final in 2013 and Aruna Quadri made it to the final in 2015. Apart from this, Nigerian players have always been making it to the semifinal stage. I believe we can win the title this year because most of the foreign-based players have been doing very well in their various clubs and the skills and talents of the local players cannot be underestimated,” he said.
The former Commonwealth champion who will be attending his seventh Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil was however thrilled with the turnout of players particularly participants from Europe and this he says would help raise the standard of the sport in Nigeria.
“I believe the presence of players across the globe particularly the ones from Europe will surely help our players who have not been playing against Europeans. The eyes of the world are now on Nigeria with the giant stride the country has made in the last four years by hosting such quality competition. I am hopeful that our players will surely gain from taking part in the tournament and the profile of the sport will continue to improve in the country,” Toriola added.

"I dropped my degree to become a taxi driver" – Abuja-based female taxi driver tells her story

– Susan Asakpa is a female taxi driver based in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja

– She studied Accounting at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka

– One day her father bought her the car which she converted into a taxi

History books recorded that Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, a political campaigner, women's activist and the mother of the legendary musician, Fela Kuti, was the first woman to drive a car in Nigeria.

Today, while some women are afraid of the car steering, others have decided to earn a living in the male-dominated field of taxi drivers. One of such ladies is Delta state born Susan Asakpa.
"I studied Accounting at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I worked in a hotel for about three years. There was nothing new anymore, no challenge and the salary was stagnant. Later on, my boss called me up and told me that he will be reducing my salary by N10,000. I was surprised."
Susan tells NAIJ.com
"Before then, I have been thinking about what business I can do. I had three business ideas (hair dressing, food and taxi business). I prayed about them after which I chose this one,"

the young lady continued.
"I spoke with my dad who happens to be my closest confidant and he quickly got a loan from the bank and bought me this car. He has been so supportive, not a single word of discouragement," she said.
With the needed encouragement from her father who bought her a car on loan, Asakpa began her journey as the first female graduate taxi driver in Abuja.

Speaking on the journey so far, stated that her major challenge on the job is being denied access into some government offices and estates due to the colour of her car.
"One of my low moments on this job is when I am not allowed into government offices because my car is painted green which is the official colour for Abuja taxis."
"Maybe I read the law wrongly or something, but it is stated that if I want to use my vehicle for commercial purpose, I should paint it in the uniform colour which is green. I have lost a lot of customers and this has affected my business a lot of times."

"Also, I have had good times when others stopped me, often shocked to see me on the steering, they hopped into the car and most times they even ask me to keep the change (which is good for business)."
Susan continues
Miss Asakpa hopes to further her education and become a lecturer in future
The beautiful lady declined to comment when asked about her marital status. However, she hinted that she could marry a taxi driver if he is educated, focused and speaks good English.

Asakpa, who is a role model to other young girls, hopes to invest in her business, continued her education and become a lecturer in the nearest future.
"My advice to young girls is that they should dare to be positively different because most of us are afraid to be different. Well that has not been my challenge. Some of these young girls have the talent but they are afraid to come out."
"I know I am not the first girl who had this idea but today, I am the first graduate who has come out to do it. There are graduates these days that are diversifying. So be original,"

she concluded.
